Véu
Parque da Carvalha, Sertã
Parque da Carvalha (Oak Garden) stands out in the village and in the region of the Beira Baixa as an urban civic centre with a strong landscape identity. Its unusual scale, the confluence of two streams along with deep historical memories, create an effective place of aggregation that in turn originates the sense of belonging.
Following the sequence of Works of Art in the Landscape Véu (Veil) occupies an unequivocal geographical location: the garden.
The Parque da Carvalha, for its identity and assembling features, may be described as Sertã civic center, as a ‘main plaza’ or ‘rossio’. Carvalha is the favoured place of gathering, of aggregation, where all sorts of activities are held, and it also marks the urban morphology as a limit, where the watercourse frames the perspective towards an agricultural landscape.
The starting point of the piece Véu at Sertã is precisely the junction between the consolidated space of Parque da Carvalha and the rural landscape, with both perspectives meeting in the embankment.
Véu is a piece located at the embankment at Ribeira da Sertã, defined by two porticoes made of steel, that support an undulated set of six reflective surfaces that are moulded and sequentially layered.
This sequence of mirrored surfaces reinforces and multiplies the reflection and relations between the river, the garden and the rural landscape.
From the old bridge, the scenographic character of Véu enhances the relationship between the urban settlement and the rural landscape in an apparently equivocal phenomenon. The veil of a princess of the Beiras is evoked. In this sense, the piece can lead to the reappropriation of this place and its memories.
